EMC End of Life’s Clariion and Celerra
In a statement last week, EMC announced Celerra and Clariion have both been “End of Life’d.”  The VNX is a natural extension of both lines, and it was necessary to merge them.  With the new code and management tool (Unisphere) – updates will continue to be supported to the CX4/NS lines for the foreseeable future (i.e. 5 years).

VMware’s Horizon App Manager is a Broker for Cloud Services (Internal, External)

VMware’s Horizon App Manager allows for unified control and provisioning for cloud services such as: Box.net, BroadVision, Google, Salesforce.com, WebEx, Workday and other Cloud based applications (ADP, American Airlines, Facebook, NetDocs, NetSuite Yahoo, Zoho)

Horizon Mobile Hypervisor
An offshoot of Horizon – currently supported only on Android, but coming soon to iPhone and Blackberry.

Horizon Mobile Hypervisor will allow users to push cloud apps to mobile devices regardless of their location (cloud or datacenter) – without having to trust the end user’s device and security. Think of a secure box inside your cell phone, controllable by IT.

View 5.0 Announced

The announcement of VMware View  5.0 came last week promising to streamline desktop and application management while increase security and control. Aimed at enhancing the end-user experience across sessions and devices, VMware View 5.0 enables higher availability and agility of desktop services reducing the total cost of desktop ownership up to 50%.

New Features Include:

  • Support for vSphere 5
  • PC over IP (PCoIP) protocol efficiency, up to 75 percent less bandwidth and use case configurable bandwidth settings. 
  • Premier Edition only: View user profile Management which VMware calls persona, providing user personalization to stateless desktops.
  • View Client for Android and Cisco CIUS
  • Announced upcoming Client for iPad providing multitasking, RSA integration and a new presentation mode.
  • View Media Services 
    • For 3D graphics, to enable basic 3D applications in View Desktops, like Windows Aero, without GPU requirement. On vSphere 5 only.
    • For Integrated Unified Communications for optimized VOIP performance and VOIP support for leading UC vendors.
  • PCoIP Extension Services, which provides over 20 session statistics over Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
  • PCoIP Continuity Services, which provides a seamless end-user experience by detecting interruptions and automatic session reconnection within 30 seconds
  • Enhanced Security Settings by enabling client certificate handling customization using a browser certificate model.
